Parents are well aware that getting kids to brush their teeth for the suggested two minutes can be challenging. Dr. Mo and Dr. G, pediatric dentists at Must Love Kids in Vancouver, encourage parents to use a variety of resources to help their kids thoroughly brush their teeth.

The Importance of 2×2 for Kids

It’s essential that kids get in the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Choose a toothbrush that is small enough to fit into your child’s mouth and has soft bristles. This is also an excellent opportunity to have your child pick a toothbrush that is fun and serves as a small encouragement for your child to brush his or her teeth. Brush your child’s teeth gently, making sure to reach each surface and along the gumline.

At least one recent study on dental care for children shows that children find it difficult to brush their teeth for the full two minutes as recommended. Here are a couple of ways to make this task easier to put into practice.

Use Videos to Help Kids Brush

A recent blog post at Must Love Kids featured the use of fun and informative videos that can help teach kids to brush their teeth. These videos allow kids to brush along with Elmo and additional Sesame Street characters, offering good information with catchy tunes that will be difficult to forget. Keep kids brushing their teeth while the videos play, and don’t be afraid to play them over again as many times as needed to establish that two minute mark or more – children love repetition!

Another option is to head over to 2min2x, an effort by the Ad Council and Partnership for Healthy Mouths/Healthy Lives to keep kids brushing. The videos displayed at 2min2x target children of different ages and feature different artists like The Dream Jam Band, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and, of course, Sesame Street.

Disney and Oral-B Encourage Kids to Brush

Disney has recently partnered with Oral-B to release an app called The Disney Magic Timer App, which rewards kids each time they complete two full minutes of brushing their teeth. Character images from Marvel and Disney are revealed every time the goal is met. The program provides 16 custom animations and 1,600 rewards over twenty-one days, which is just long enough to establish good daily dental care habits! This fun and informative dental care app is FREE for download through Google Play and iTunes.
